Upcoming Releases! & How an Indie Author makes his own book covers.

I’m excited to announce that both Starstorm:Battle Line and Reaping the Whirlwind will be coming out very soon. While I shy away from exact dates, I am very confident that I’ll have Starstorm: Battle Line ready for release sometime in the first week of September! That’s right around the corner. Reaping the Whirlwind, the sequel to Rebel Empire is in its final stages and will be ready in between October and November. While I don’t want to give anything away I would like to let everyone know that Reaping the Whirlwind brings the Spanish-Confederate War to an exciting conclusion. I’m not going to leave you hanging this time. But while Reaping the Whirlwind brings the present storyline to a conclusion, it also sets things up for my next series of novels set in the same alternate timeline. This next series will deal with the First World War . I’m planning either three or four books in that series. I hope to have the first one released by November 2015. In the meantime theirs plenty of other projects coming down the pipeline. I give thanks to the fans of my books and hope you will enjoy my soon to be released novels.

I’m still not attending to this blog as much as I should, though to be honest my time is extremely limited especially if I am to squeeze writing books into my busy schedule. But for this post I thought I’d also give everyone some insight into how I create my book covers. Because of modern publishing technology it is possible to publish virtually for free– if you are willing to do all the work yourself. I do my own formatting and design and I create my own book covers. In the future, if my fan base continues to grow as it has, I may be able to hire an artist to design the covers for my book. (Though for those bothered by the editing of my books you may prefer I spend the money on a professional editor). Fear not, I’m in the market for one. But for now I will have to do. So without further ado here’s my prototype book cover for Starstorm: Battle Line.

Battle Line Cover Prototype

Its not finished but this is roughly what it will look like. Hopefully I’ll be able to get the final version to look a lot sharper. For any fellow Indie writers out there looking to make their own covers there’s not much to it. I use Microsoft paint. I then get either public domain images (things from Nasa or the U.S. Military are generally copyright free) or I purchase the right to use images online. I then use the cut and paste features of paint and put the cover together. Its not the best technique in the world and my covers aren’t the best but they do. Hopefully one day my books will sell well enough that I’ll be able to have professional looking covers.  Anyhow, Its time I get back to work. Hope everyone is doing well and I’m looking forward to hearing what you think.

I am unsure about the look of the front cover. Do you have an email address I can send some ideas to?

With a title of ‘Battle Line’ I think it should have some sort of line in.
